Ingredient Focus: Retinol

I can honestly say that my skin is the best it's been in about 2 years. AMAZING! A couple of months ago I started using a retinol cream for the first time. I was a bit scared to try a retinol product because I thought it would make my skin red, flaky, and super irritated. But it's actually quite the opposite!

The lovely ladies at My Organic Zone sent over their Retinol moisturizer and omg… You guys are going to love it!!! But before we get into that, I will say that no matter what type of product you use, Retinol is a really powerful ingredient. As an esthetician and your internet BFF, I want to make sure you guys are as informed as possible.

WHAT IS RETINOL

Retinol is derived from Vitamin A, and you know we LOVE our vitamins here at LLG. Retinoid is another term you’ll hear lots, it’s just the umbrella term for the other compounds derived from Vitamin A.

WHAT DOES RETINOL DO

My Organic Zone Retinol Moisturizer

Retinol is a beauty industry fave when it comes to anti-aging, acne, and treating hyperpigmentation. Retinol reduces inflammation, so I’ve had literally no breakouts (not even hormonal) since using it which is MAJOR for me. It doesn’t technically exfoliate, but it speeds up the cell turnover process and my complexion has been hella glowy! It also increases the production of collagen which makes for supple and plump skin. Thankfully I don’t have too many wrinkles yet (SPF all day everyday baby), but I noticed that the fine lines around my eyes are much less apparent. I’ve also noticed it’s helped fade the hyperpigmented acne scars on my chin and the overall texture of my face has really improved. PRODUCT RESULT VERDICT: So much yasss for being blemish free, glowing, smooth, and juicy AF.

RETINOL MYTHS

IT WILL MAKE THE SKIN RED AND FLAKY

I mentioned before that I was apprehensive! I did find my skin was a bit sensitive for the first week, but I’m totally back to normal now! It was not horrific or out of the norm by any means. In the My Organic Zone formula, there is vitamin e and shea butter which is ultra soothing and helps to nourish any dryness.

YOU CAN’T USE IT IF YOUR SKIN TYPE IS DRY OR SENSITIVE

You absolutely can, but just ease yourself into it. Try using it 4 times a week in the PM and see what happens! If that went well, then try using it daily. As I mentioned, the MOZ formula contains very nourishing ingredients and is all natural, making it perfect for any skin type. If you do end up with any redness/flakiness, do know that it is just part of the process. It will go away once your skin adjusts.

OTHER TIPS

SPF IS YOUR BFF

You should be wearing sunscreen every day already, but it is an absolute MUST when you’re using retinol.

STORING YOUR PRODUCTS

Retinol is a very unstable molecule (similar to what I talked about in my vitamin C post) and therefore, it can go bad quite quickly! You want to keep it away from sunlight and exposed to as little oxygen as possible. That’s why I LOVE the packaging and pump of the MOZ moisturizer, it keeps it fresh AF for so long. If you notice your product change in color, consistency, or smell… That’s how you know It’s time to toss it.

So overall I am a HUGE fan of the My Organic Zone Retinol cream and it will be sticking around in my skincare routine for a very long time. I love the pump on the jar, the ingredients (it also has antioxidants which fight free radicals), and the results I’ve been seeing. I would recommend this for all skin types, especially those who are looking to target acne, hyperpigmentation, or textured skin!
