All About Physical Exfoliants + My Top Picks

Exfoliation is one of the major keys for smooth glowing skin.

Today, I’m giving you the complete rundown on physical exfoliants! There are several different types of physical exfoliants and I’ll show you how to pick the best one based on your skin type.

PHYSICAL VS CHEMICAL

Physical exfoliants have a rough, grainy texture that helps to manually slough off dead cells. So, you must scrub and rub your face to reap the benefits! Whereas a chemical exfoliant doesn’t require any scrubbing, it uses acid to break down the “glue” that holds skin cells together and removes dead cells.

DO’S AND DON’TS

DO choose a gentle formula if you have sensitive skin or are prone to redness. This scrub from Dermalogica is a great pick for sensitive skin.

DON’T freak out if you see your skin get a little bit red after exfoliating, rubbing the skin will get your circulation going, so a slight flush is totally fine!

DON’T use a physical scrub if you’re having active breakouts, it will only further irritate the skin and it can be quite painful.

DON’T over-exfoliate, this will only dry out the skin and leave it feeling raw. You should only be exfoliating 2-3 times a week at the most.

MY FAVORITE PHYSICAL EXFOLIANTS

Olehenriksen Transforming Walnut Scrub  – This is my favorite physical exfoliant at the moment! It smells amazing and makes my skin so soft. Great for all skin types.

Summer Fridays Overtime Mask – You guys know I love pumpkin in skincare (here’s why)! This combines both chemical (TYSM pumpkin enzymes) and physical exfoliation (apricot seed powder) so the skin feels SO smooth after.

Zo Skin Health Exfoliating Polish – So very boujee and amazing! Full review here.

L’Oreal Sugar Scrub – This is a great drugstore option. Sugar is a humectant, meaning it draws in water and hydration. The coffee in this is also fab and provides so many benefits.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant – This comes in a dry powder form and is my top pick for sensitive skin, but works well for all skin types.

Fresh Umbrian Clay Exfoliant – I love this for oily or combination skin because clay is great at absorbing excess oil and balancing the skin.
